It starts from Richard Menniss’ point of view. Really, he pretty much wrote these parts himself. I just tidied a little.
Actually, he wrote most of Narrative 4 too and his parts of Narrative 6, only he didn’t know he was writing a narrative. You see, he got in a confessing mood after he realized what a major creep he’d been, and I let him confess everything to me. In writing. And then I posted it.
(Didn’t tell him about the posting. Oops.)
Anyway, he’s a colorful writer, if a bit black and white. And depressing as heck. — Ox

I think Mennis missed something the Eldest said – I think it was something about there being a door not of his making . . .
This suggests to me that his future success is going to come from learning a new game to enjoy. The spy game, the danger game, the adrenaline-junkie game – those won’t work for him any more. He’d have to give them up soon anyhow because those are games for the young, and by his own admission he’s well past that. These narratives suggest he’s trying to hold onto his past, instead of looking to a very different future.
Merlin- Those who forget their past are doomed to repeat it. Maybe he was looking how to not repeat the mistakes of his youth.
You can learn from the past without trying to continue living it. I once spent nearly 10 years obsessively trying to get the attention of a classmate who became one of the top cheerleaders for my school. Never even got a peck on the cheek for the time invested. I no longer even advertise what school that was, but learned enough from those years to have a fairly happy wife.
Merlin- To have a happy wife is a good thing. Maybe for him all he has is the glory of his past and dreads what the future may bring to his doorstep. I am happy for you though. :)
he never lived through life in a normal way, a youth would.
he’s got Francine now… for how long though?
gees, what’s with the bitch slap? Ox- you oughtta slapped him back!
I know that’s Menniss just being Menniss, all spontaneous violence & all, but I tend to agree. He kinda needs a slap at this point don’t you think, if only to calm him down a bit.
Kind of an unfair contest. He big guy. Kidnaps people. Uses guns. Me, nice pacifist joker sort.
He wouldn’t stand a chance.
It would get his attention. He’s used to using violence to gain control of situations he feels uneasy about. He’s been uneasy, and largely on the defensive, ever since Blair met Janice. Perhaps he should try meditation?
